My kitchen design experience with Grok

My kitchen design experience with Grok
My kitchen design experience with Grok

Some experimentation with Grok shows that its capability for kitchen design is very limited. If you are hoping to design your own kitchen using AI, you will, unfortunately, get little more than very general suggestions.

Disclaimer: This example refers to Grok; however, the issues discussed may not be unique to this system and can be observed, to varying degrees, in other AI platforms currently in use.

This is what Grok promises: “It lets you quickly create photorealistic or styled visuals from text descriptions—no need for expensive 3D software, stock photos, or waiting on a renderer. You can use it for client presentations, concept exploration, mood boards, marketing, and even before/after visuals.”

Grok also assures: “I can work with your real photos, existing renderings, and client images — this is one of the most powerful ways to use Grok Imagine in your kitchen design business.”

Well, I have made an initial attempt and uploaded a drawing of a single-wall kitchen prepared by a professional detailer, along with notes on the materials to be used: “Create a photorealistic image based on this rendering: kitchen benchtop and splashback made of Dekton Nacre 12mm, cabinetry made of Natural Oak TruNatur MR MDF 18mm by EGR, handles 7111964 Sand Silk Touch by Modar, appliances by Miele, tap  Celsius All-in-One by Zip Water. Thank you!”

Grok confirmed the requests:

Key features included:

  • Warm Natural Oak cabinetry with authentic grain
  • Elegant cream Dekton Nacre benchtop & splashback
  • Sand Silk Touch handles
  • Miele appliances integrated where shown
  • Zip Celsius All-in-One tap”

Grok ignored my requirements and created an image of an L-shaped kitchen, which has nothing in common with the layout and design in the drawing.

In the second attempt I tried to correct Grok: “Please use the rendering and the materials provided, my kitchen is straight without corners, the oven is H 7440 BM PureLine CleanSteel Speed Oven by Miele, the handles should be 7111964 Sand Silk Touch by Modar”

Unfortunately, it took Grok 8 seconds to create the second image. As you see, handles totally disappeared, but some new features were surprisingly applied: new colour to the wall cabinets, open shelves above the wall cabinets, and a kitchen island appeared in the front. Needless to say, that the layout of the cabinets was not based on the provided drawing!

I tried again: “I want a wide-angle view of the whole kitchen including all the cabinets of the nominated widths: Base cabinets left to right (exact as requested):

  • 600 mm × 2: Drawers (top cutlery drawer + 2 pot drawers)
  • 150 mm: Pull-out cabinet
  • 400 mm: Fully integrated Miele dishwasher
  • 600 mm: Sink cabinet with undermounted Franke Urban Granite sink
  • 475 mm: Pull-out cabinet”

You might say that my prompting was not perfect, but that was the idea: to explore how Grok can help people with no or little knowledge about kitchen design and AI.

As you can see, each time the layout changed, it did not meet my requirements; it appears that Grok merely selected another available image from its database.

The images appeared randomly in response to my request to apply the actual dimensions in the drawing.

To make a long story short, my conversation with Grok has strengthened my opinion that my job as a kitchen design and renovation project manager is still secure and will not be replaced by AI in the near future. A human detailer/drafter would do the job better, perhaps slower, but definitely more accurately and efficiently. Also, always trust common sense rather than AI when you are being advised to install a pull-out table like this …

It might be slightly inconvenient to have your worktable at Knee height...
