Dulux has named Soulful Sage its 2027 Colour of the Year. Here's how this versatile green works in a kitchen renovation, with three practical styling directions.
Every year, Dulux Trade brings together colour experts from around the world to forecast the tones that will define interiors over the year ahead. For 2027, they've landed on Soulful Sage — a soft, silvery green, and one of the more versatile colours we've seen come through in a while for kitchen renovations.
Soulful Sage sits on the softer, more understated end of the green spectrum — warmer than a cool eucalyptus, more muted than an olive. Dulux describes it as ethereal: a tone associated with clarity, healing and calm, and one that can shift from warm to cool depending on the light and the materials around it.
The insight behind the choice is a simple one. After a run of bold, saturated interiors, people are gravitating toward spaces that feel lighter and less demanding on the senses — kitchens included.
A kitchen carries more visual weight than almost any other room — cabinetry, benchtops, splashback, hardware and appliances all sit in the same sightline. A colour that's too saturated can quickly feel busy. Sage has enough presence to anchor a scheme without tipping into that territory, which is part of why we're expecting to see a lot more of it in 2027 kitchen projects.
Dulux's 2027 palette work groups colours into three directions, and each translates naturally into a kitchen scheme.
Warm: Sage joinery or an island paired with warm timber tones, a terracotta or clay-toned splashback, and brass or brushed bronze hardware. Grounded and welcoming — a strong option for a family kitchen.
Pure: Sage against soft grey stone benchtops, a quiet neutral wall colour and matte black or brushed nickel fittings. Calm and uncluttered — well suited to a smaller kitchen or an apartment renovation, where a visually quiet scheme helps a compact space feel bigger.
Joyful: Sage paired with blush pink accents and ochre detailing, kept light with plenty of warm timber. Optimistic without becoming busy — a good direction for anyone wanting personality without going bold across the whole room.
Sage is a colour that responds strongly to light. The same paint or joinery finish can read cool and grey in a supplier showroom and noticeably warmer and greener in your own kitchen, depending on your windows, your existing finishes, and what time of day you're looking at it. A colour chip or an online image is a starting point, not a final answer.
