Read articleIn an apartment, every centimetre has to earn its place. Floor space is limited, walls are precious and the kitchen often doubles as the dining room, home office and entertaining space. That is why we pay close attention to the hardware behind great joinery. The right fitting can change how a room works without changing its footprint.
We recently spent time with three new solutions from Hettich, the German hardware specialist whose fittings sit inside many of the kitchens and wardrobes we design. Each one solves a familiar apartment problem in a clever, considered way.
FurnSpin is a rotating cabinet system that turns smoothly to reveal a second side. One moment it presents open shelving for books, glassware or a favourite piece of ceramics. The next, it turns to show concealed storage, keeping everyday items neatly out of sight.
We see FurnSpin working beautifully at the end of a kitchen run, in a breakfast bar zone or as a feature unit between the kitchen and living area.
A full-length mirror is something most people want and few apartments have room for. Hettich’s pull-out swivel mirror solves this by living inside the wardrobe. It slides out on a smooth runner, swivels to face you, then tucks neatly away when you are done.
This is the newest addition, and one of the most elegant. The AvanTech YOU Illumination design profile is a slim LED light strip that fits along the side of Hettich’s AvanTech YOU drawers. It switches on automatically when the drawer opens and off again when it closes.
What makes it special is the power source. Each profile runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, so there is no wiring to run through the cabinetry and no electrician needed to connect it. When it needs a top-up, it recharges with the USB cable supplied in around four hours.
In an apartment kitchen, where overhead lighting can be limited and cabinetry is often deep and dark, lit drawers make a real everyday difference. In a bedroom or bathroom, the room-facing option adds a subtle night-time glow without switching on the main lights.

Hardware is often the last thing people think about and one of the first things they notice once they live with it. A few points to keep in mind when planning:
